shapes and monsters is an international collaborative improvisation project with two members in barcelona and two members in chicago. diego caicedo and gabriel millan play in snorkel quintet and etermortifera among others. reid karris is a solo improviser and member of step slow. keith helt is a member of catholic witches.

their first album, chkm, was improvised recorded between november 2011 and february 2013. tracks were sent back and forth. limited takes were allowed in order to maintain an improvised feeling/aesthetic.

the newness from pyr is from catholic witches, a duo of free noise improvisers featuring alex and keith of piss piss moan moan moan and sky event respectively. building on the years they played together in the rories, their new album questions about the hairbook is drenched with sheets of feedback and heavily reverbed noise. low end bass rumbles the speakers and crunching loops lurch forward over skittering free drums. ecstatic drones, pulses, guitar skree all build into an extended monolith of low end roar and scifi theremin squall. musical telepathic conversation. get it here.

it’s been a long time coming, but it’s finally here. the newest release from pan y rosas discos is the skronk drone duo, sky event. using a cello, guitar and little instruments this improvising chicago group creates a joyous noise of microsound scrape and swirling strings. the two members are inspired by modern out composition and contemporary chicago creative music. submit and check out their self-titled debut now!
