kind words for a trail, a texture by rosalind hall and ada rave!

It’s as though Rosalind Hall is wielding a hand-held fan, pressing it against surfaces so that it buzzes in frictional complaint, without applying the necessary pressure to stop the blades entirely. It’s a delicate navigation of brinks and almosts – her saxophone lingers upon single notes and tilts them, ever so slowly, until they threaten to fall over. Her instrument throbs uneasily as overtones force their way into the frame, turning ovular drops of pure tone into snarls of dissonance. It’s an agonising sonic yoga routine; pitches bend into awkward poses and then hold them for as long as concentration, exhalation and muscle power will permit, the note wobbling like calves and biceps in convulsions of tension. Collapse is always a mere false step away.

the beguiling, chameleonic saxophone has possessed rosalind hall for most of her life. as she has grown, she has made it her mission to extricate the horn from her trainings, to unearth the inner vibrations of the saxophone body and to elicit from it the sonic microcosms of her mind. she has made reeds from different materials and found extensions and objects for the bell that alter and extend the playing techniques, creating precarious vibrations that necessitate playing and responding in the moment. improvisation is the guiding force behind her music, experimentation and redefinition a driving goal and collaboration with people and spaces a transcendental joy.

ada rave is a saxophonist, improviser and composer, born in chubut (argentina) in 1974. she began her musical development in 2000 in the buenos aires jazz scene. her musical interests are jazz, free improvisation and composition. she works on her own projects and also collaborates with other musician’s – performing in several places around argentina. since 2013 she has been based in amsterdam where she performs with several musicians in the netherlands and europe. she continues researching her personal approach to the sound and interaction with other musicians as well as the environment, expanding her passion for the free improvisation.
