pan y rosas release roots and ripples by wilhelm matthies and reid karris!

Wilhelm Matthies mostly records in the studio releasing solo, duet and group pieces on Soundcloud and his micro-netlabel, darkpebble-bluewave. Mostly his music is contemporary classical either as free improvisation or using graphic composition. Since 2012 Wilhelm has been developing the mosesa, a string instrument that allows for maximum access to the string spectrum and allows various sounding boards to be attached.

roots and ripples is an internet collaboration. In march of 2018, Wilhelm and Reid each recorded three tracks on their own and then exchanged them to finish the other’s pieces. The sound is: earthy scratches, smears, thumps and bumps, and ringing, clear bell tones. Sometimes crashing and crackling.

interview with reid karris!

Reid Karris is a Chicago-based multi-instrumentalist, composer and improviser, as well as an all-around nice guy. He recently took some time to answer a few of our questions.

How many albums did you release / perform on in 2017? I’m counting four…

2017 did feel like a really productive year but sometimes it’s hard for me to keep track because a lot of times the music was recorded the previous year. It was also an important year because some of the releases were physical, which is something that I hadn’t done in a long time. There were three cassette releases and I am really happy with them, both the music on them as well as the way they look. I also self-released some live recordings. For this I guess I’ll talk about them in order of their release…

pan y rosas release arbor philosophica by reid karris!

reid karris is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, sound enthusiast and improviser hailing from chicago, illinois trying very hard to get all the music stuck in his head out for all the world to hear. after spending years as an odd guitarist trying to fit in with the world of rock music reid shifted his focus towards improvisation, noise, drone and avant-garde. his primary instruments for doing so are prepared guitar and drum kit sent through electronics.

this music is inspired mainly by the musica universalis or harmony of the spheres, which deals with the idea that celestial bodies all emit their own unique hum based on their orbital revolution. the other inspiration is the alchemic concept of the philosophical tree, which has seven branches representing the seven planets and their corresponding metal. the idea for this album is the combination of all these ideas into one score to create a drone that shifts through a progression of tones as one travels from one side of the solar system to the other.

the sound is: a summoning of layers. heralding okay “a”. birds of sub warbling. the slip of tape crash. whirs and bowls. swirl uprising. swell. waves crest beneath electricity. time smears grain.
